I don’t have a $3500 camera. I wish I did, but I don’t. Photo editing software like Adobe Lightroom combined with shooting in RAW format lets me push my 2-year-old $400 camera to the limits and get the best images possible out of it. Take a look at this “after & before” image below.
The edited image below used the graduated filter, adjustment brush, spot removal brush, and a “punchy landscapes” preset. Take a look at the original out-of-camera image and you’ll start to understand my love of Lightroom.

Thanks for the example, William! Mastering the post processing tools doesn’t make one a better photographer, but can certainly help to make more attractive or expressive pictures. All part of the “art” of digital imaging.
Personally I don’t agree with changing a shot that much, but to make “adjustments” or “make fixes” to improve a photo it seems like it works fine. Using the TIFF setting gives ALOT options anyway.
I agree, the bottom one is MUCH better.
