It’s over. The US failed to defeat Ghana in the first 2010 World Cup knockout round and are headed home. Nonetheless, this year’s competition was a huge win for US soccer. The sport is becoming more and more popular in the United States and that is most evident in the fans.
This year Americans bought more tickets to the World Cup than any other nation*. At the USA v. Slovenia game I attended on June 18th that was very evident. US soccer fans attended in hordes and they all sported shirts, scarves, hats, glasses, face paint and all sorts of other whacky accessories to show their national pride.
