Yesterday was a huge day in US soccer history. The US National Team beat Algeria 1-0 with a goal in the final minutes of the game which allowed them to move on in the competition. US soccer fans all over the world erupted in cheers, screams, and cries of joy.

At the USA v. Slovenia game I attended in Johannesburg last week I saw the same reactions as our team came back from a two point deficit to tie the game. I’ll be posting some of my favorite photos of fans in the following days. For now, here are two shots of overjoyed fans that I took immediately after the tying goal agains Slovenia on June 18th.

Normally portraits are supposed to focus on a person’s eyes – that is the “window to the soul” after all. However, in my rush to grab these shots and with the fans jumping up and down, my images ended up focusing on their mouths. I love these images much more with the open mouths in focus because at that moment in time that was the window and it was wide open.
