The Veil

I took this photo on my first trip to Nalerigu, Ghana. The woman was a patient that Heidi saw on clinic day at the Baptist Medical Center. Last year I submitted it in one of my camera club’s photo contests and it got 4th place in the B/W category.

I just found out that it won 3rd place in the end-of-year “Print of the Year” competition. It’s exciting not only to have my work appreciated and recognized but to be able to share the beauty of West Africa with folks here in Middle Georgia.

The Little Prince

Le Petit Prince is a very famous French novel and a favorite of Heidi’s and mine. In fact, it is so famous that it’s main character and the author are pictured on French currency.

My camera club has a competition category called “Creative Digital” and is for photographic images that have been “creatively altered” using imaging software like Photoshop. While I chuckle at the fact that “creative” is only assigned to photos that have been manipulated in Photoshop (often those are the least creative), I decided to take a stab at being “creative.”

The image below was created from two photos I recently took. The planet is from a panorama I shot from the top of Bradley Mountain. Using a “pinching” technique I wrap the panorama in on itself so that it creates a sphere (kind of a 2D version of taking a piece of paper and folding it into a cone). Then I cut Trey out from a photo at Jarrell Plantation and placed him on the planet. Add some noise and make it glow for stars, draw a dot and stretch & curve it for a comet, drop a lens flare in for a super nova, and a dark blue gradient backdrop and Voila! We have our own Little Prince.

I’ll let you know if it is “creative” enough and wins anything.

Photo Scavenger Hunt

I participated in my first camera club event yesterday. It was a photo scavenger hunt in which we were given 10 song titles to interpret into photos. Driving around looking for shots was a great way for Heidi and me to get more familiar with downtown Macon. Click the image to see the 10 photos I submitted and wish me luck. I’ll find out in a couple weeks what the results were.

Goodbye to the Junior Boys Contest

The Junior Boys video contest results were announced today and Kenny and I did not win. We were listed as “runner-ups” so at least we can feel appreciated.

There is nothing worse than losing a contest to someone you think doesn’t deserve to win. However, I’m very pleased with the winning pick – it definitely deserved it. It is an awesome stop animation/photography sequence that still boggles my mind as to how he pulled it off.

Junior Boys Concert Videos

Heidi and I saw Junior Boys up in Tampa last night and I got to speak with lead singer Jeremy Greenspan before the show. I mentioned that Kenny and I had made a video in the band’s video contest and he said he remember ours and liked it. I had brought my camera to the show and asked him if I could get some footage and he was cool with it.

So here is the unedited footage. I recorded every song in the setlist except two. I was very surprised how great the audio turned out since I was right by two giant speakers.

Gentle Men Win!

Back in November I filmed a video with my brother David for Asthmatic Kitty’s YouTube contest for Rafter’s new album. I was one of the first to finish my video and post it and was quite confident I would win. However, as the deadline approached more and more great videos were submitted until there were 43 when the contest closed. I had pretty much given up on winning since my competitors were of such high-caliber.

But in the end, my video was picked for the Quality Award (despite YouTube’s terrible encoding job). So thanks to everyone who encouraged me while I was filming & editing. Thanks to Rafter for the great music. Thanks to Asthmatic Kitty for the chance to compete. And thanks to the 42 other video makers for setting the bar so high.
