Trey’s Childhood

Earlier this week I took my son up the road to the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge to find some new trails to explore. We followed the Little Rock Wildlife Drive into some amazing forests and wetlands. One of the coolest finds was a portion of the woods that had been burned by a prescribed fire in 2008. The forest floor is still littered with burnt trees and my 4-year-old was climbing all over them.

As he got filthier and filthier from the charcoal, I finally had him take his shirt off and rub the soot all over himself. Being an overcast day, the light was great for some stunning images of him climbing in the rubble. My brother-in-law Kenny Jensen made the comparison of these images to Andrei Tarkovsky’s legendary debut film Ivan’s Childhood (watch the intro). Now that is flattery!

Earth Day Photoshoot

It wasn’t so much that it was Earth Day as it was we were just plain bored. My son has been on Spring Break all week and we were running out of new activities to entertain us. You can’t go wrong with an animal costume, some face paint, and a romp in the woods.

Iathen’s Fate

I made this video to test out my new Canon 7D’s video capabilities. The video was shot with a Lensbaby Muse with plastic optics which gives it the hazy look and the colorful lens flares. It was filmed at 60 frames per second in 720pHD, meaning I could achieve a very smooth slow motion effect.

The idea for the story came from a drawing of Mike Lowery’s that I saw on his blog a while back. The song “Strung Finger of an Old Dear” by Macon, GA’s own Oh Dorian seemed to be a perfect match to the dreamy footage playing in slow-mo.

Green Theme

One of my favorite things my local camera club does is give out theme assignments. Usually everyone is given the same theme and they have a few weeks to shoot photos that fit that theme. Recently they switched things up a bit and had everyone draw a different, random theme out of a hat. I got GREEN – here are my photos.

A Romp in the Rain

The past two days have been full of rain and dark skies so when the rain finally stopped falling I let my son run around the woods behind our house. There is a trail back there that had turned into a creek and flooded the forest floor. Trey had a blast exploring and jumping in puddles – I had a blast snapping photos.

** April 2, 2009 update ** The first image below won 1st place in my camera club’s recent theme assignment “Promises”. I titled the photo “Looking for the Rainbow” when I submitted it.
