PEEL Portraits

Back in December, I went up to Waleska, Georgia to collaborate on a creative project with Jym Davis. I can’t talk about the project just yet (it’s top secret) but I can tell you about PEEL, a by-product of our late night of filming at Reinhardt University.

While Jym was working on what became the 10-minute short film entitled PEEL and I took the portraits below of a few of the actors involved. You can watch an abbreviated version of PEEL on YouTube. The first few opening shots are mine, but the rest of the mind-boggling sequence is Jym’s (including the great soundtrack).

[trespass]

Last summer on my annual camping trip (2006, 2007) with Jerry Span, Jym Davis, and Kenny Jensen we filmed a lot of random footage in the Smokies. Jym took that footage and edited together a great short film using the footage and a soundtrack he mixed himself. The film has been submitted to a film festival in San Francisco and we are planning on expounding on the film’s vague themes this summer and filming a longer version.

New Music Video for Morning Recordings

I just wrapped up editing a new music video for the band Morning Recording. The song “Sugar Waltz” is from their upcoming album “The Welcome Kinetic” which will be released on Loose Thread this October.

The entire video was edited (and tinted) from 1940s Coney Island film reels. We usually think of pre-WWII America as being a time of innocence and morality. However, as I dug through the footage I was quite disturbed by some of the images of “Pleasureland.” I tried to convey the uneasy feelings it gave me in the final edit. That said – I still left out some very offensive footage of the KKK and African Americans.

New (old) Adam Project Music Video

I recently ran across this old video from 2003 that I created with Jym Davis and Kenny Jensen. All the footage was shot by Jym and Kenny and I edited it to a demo version of Adam’s song. We used this video with several others to project at the band’s live shows while they played the song. Some of the footage is from Jym’s In Flux video that Kenny and I worked on post-production effects for.

Goodbye to the Junior Boys Contest

The Junior Boys video contest results were announced today and Kenny and I did not win. We were listed as “runner-ups” so at least we can feel appreciated.

There is nothing worse than losing a contest to someone you think doesn’t deserve to win. However, I’m very pleased with the winning pick – it definitely deserved it. It is an awesome stop animation/photography sequence that still boggles my mind as to how he pulled it off.

Junior Boys Concert Videos

Heidi and I saw Junior Boys up in Tampa last night and I got to speak with lead singer Jeremy Greenspan before the show. I mentioned that Kenny and I had made a video in the band’s video contest and he said he remember ours and liked it. I had brought my camera to the show and asked him if I could get some footage and he was cool with it.

So here is the unedited footage. I recorded every song in the setlist except two. I was very surprised how great the audio turned out since I was right by two giant speakers.

Gentle Men Win!

Back in November I filmed a video with my brother David for Asthmatic Kitty’s YouTube contest for Rafter’s new album. I was one of the first to finish my video and post it and was quite confident I would win. However, as the deadline approached more and more great videos were submitted until there were 43 when the contest closed. I had pretty much given up on winning since my competitors were of such high-caliber.

But in the end, my video was picked for the Quality Award (despite YouTube’s terrible encoding job). So thanks to everyone who encouraged me while I was filming & editing. Thanks to Rafter for the great music. Thanks to Asthmatic Kitty for the chance to compete. And thanks to the 42 other video makers for setting the bar so high.

From Pixelvision to Old, Dirty Film

I just finished some post-production work on a music video Jym Davis is doing for a Georgia based bluegrass band called “Mullinix and Vickery“. Jym uses a unique technique that mixes high quality miniDV footage with footage from an antique Fisher Price PXL-2000 camera (known as pixelvision) which records video onto audio cassettes. Jym asked me to do some effects work and add another layer to the footage giving it an “old dirty film” look.

New Commerce Video now online

I’ve wrapped up editing the music video I shot last December and have posted it online. Matt (lead singer & snowman) will be pressing CDs in the coming weeks and this video will be on the DVD with 2 other music videos, 3 behind-the-scenes features, and 2 alternate versions.
