Earlier this week I took my son up the road to the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge to find some new trails to explore. We followed the Little Rock Wildlife Drive into some amazing forests and wetlands. One of the coolest finds was a portion of the woods that had been burned by a prescribed fire in 2008. The forest floor is still littered with burnt trees and my 4-year-old was climbing all over them.

As he got filthier and filthier from the charcoal, I finally had him take his shirt off and rub the soot all over himself. Being an overcast day, the light was great for some stunning images of him climbing in the rubble. My brother-in-law Kenny Jensen made the comparison of these images to Andrei Tarkovsky’s legendary debut film Ivan’s Childhood (watch the intro). Now that is flattery!

I shot 35mm film until 2007 when I bought a Canon 450D left the analogue world. With all the international travel I was doing, trying to avoid running my film through countless high-powered x-ray machines was a nightmare. I quickly adapted to digital and loved how much flexibility I had in perfecting the look of my images.

Last week, I pulled my old Holga 120s down from the attic and a roll of 120 medium format film out of the fridge – both had been in those locations for nearly four years. I exposed the roll and turned it in to Coke’s Camera, the only local camera shop in Macon that still develops 120 film (a format introduced in 1901 for the Kodak Brownie). I paid them a mere $3 for the development when I picked up the negatives today. I brought them home and scanned them into my computer.

Wow! I realized there are three key things I’ve really missed since I switched to digital:

The pressure of realizing every shot counts.
My 120 film in the Holga only gives me 16 shots. Each one has to be composed and exposed properly to turn out. I found myself holding my breath each time I pressed the shutter.

The suspense of waiting to pick up my developed negatives.
I’m spoiled by the ability to snap a photo on my dSLR and instantly see not only the image but its histogram and gazillions of other bits of information about it.

The imperfections of film.
A Holga is a plastic camera with all sorts of defects so it greatly exaggerates the imperfections of film with its vignetting, chromatic aberrations, and light leaks. My photos had all sorts of light leaks because my camera doesn’t wind the film very tightly. …and I love it!

Of the 16 shots I exposed, only 9 turned out – here they are. The only digital modifications I made were color correction (including two that turned to b/w). I hope you like them as much as I do.

They are holding an online silent auction for items donated by their friends.

I’ve given them the following image I made in Haiti earlier this year. It is a ready-to-hang, 16″x24″ canvas print that was exhibited in May at the Douglass Theatre in Macon, GA.

You can use the form below to submit a bid to them for the art work (or to just ask a question). They will write you back and give you some more information about the adoption. For security reasons I’m not posting their names or email address here.

**Auction Now Closed** Thanks to all who bid!

He opened his shirt to show me his thin figure and his belt which had 6 or more extra holes punched in the leather. I didn’t need to see his emaciated figure to understand the word “grangou.” The week before I had been learning basic Creole with some software and that word popped up in one of the first lessons. It was mixed right in with “Alo (Hello)”, “Kòman ou ye? (How are you?)”, and “Mwen regrèt sa (I’m sorry)”.

Even before Haiti’s devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake, the word “Grangou (Hungry)” was a common response to “Kòman ou ye?” Now it is even more and more common – especially among the oldest of Haitians.

In West African culture, the elderly are well-respected and cared for by their children and grandchildren. Haiti is no different but the earthquake has made food hard enough to come by for one’s own immediate family, much less to provide for one’s elderly relatives.

This grangou man lived in a small, wooden shack with is wife and sister-in-law in the village of Paskèt, just outside of Jacmel. They hadn’t eaten for days and it was obvious. The man was so weak that after walking down the hill to attend our clinic he nearly passed out from exhaustion. We had to carry him back up to his house in a chair.

As a medical team we were not equipped to distribute large quantities of food to this neglected community. We did however purchase $800 of rice & beans (that’s still a lot) and the doctors treated the food like medication – prescribing it to those that needed it most.

This family was one of the grateful recipients of the food. “Halleluiah, Peace from Jesus” the sister-in-law proclaimed when I visited them again later in the afternoon. The food was already cooking in a tiny pot on an open fire on the dirt floor of their kitchen. When I told her I would pray for their family she held her hands up to the sky and said that we would meet again in heaven.

The rice and beans we shared will only sustain them for a week or two, but their faith in Christ will sustain them for eternity.

The Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition is an annual photo contest meant to showcase the unique character, people, places, and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians. My friend Jerry Span who has lived in the Smokies for the last 5 years told me about the contest and encouraged me to participate. I submitted a total of 6 images, including one of Jerry himself which I titled “Local Color”.

Out of 1,116 photos “Local Color” was chosen as one of 7 in the “Culture” category. The photograph will be on exhibit at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of Appalachian State University, March 5 through June 5, 2010. If you or any of your friends are around Boone, NC on March 5th feel free to attend the public reception from 7-9pm at the Turchin Center.

I took this photo last summer in Guaimaca, Honduras while serving with a team from Bolingbroke, GA at an orphanage. I loved the contrast of the primary colors in his shirt with his drab surroundings. I submitted it in an MGCC contest this year and it ended up winning 3rd place in the 2010 Digital Photo of the Year contest.

This photo very obviously executes the “rule of thirds“. That method of framing an image has been around forever, well since 1797 at least, and for good reason. In fact, the judge’s comment pointed out exactly why that rule can be so effective:

“There’s a lot of story being told in this photo and it is well captured with the placement of the boy in the left 1/3 while allowing us to view his surroundings in the other 2/3s.“

If you are used to just holding up the camera and pressing the button, I encourage you to take a couple seconds to think about where your subject is in the frame and how it relates to its surroundings.

I just found out that it won 3rd place in the end-of-year “Print of the Year” competition. It’s exciting not only to have my work appreciated and recognized but to be able to share the beauty of West Africa with folks here in Middle Georgia.
