World Cup Kick-Off Concert: Fans

I’m here in South Africa working but I got a chance to get out and have some fun at the World Cup Kick-off Celebration Concert. The 3-hour concert was televised live internationally and featured big name acts like Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Alicia Keys, and John Legend. I wasn’t as thrilled about those stars as I was about the lesser known African musicians that were performing (several of which were on my last mixtape).

The concert at Orlando Stadium was attended by nearly 30,000 fans from all over the world. It was one of those wonderful occasions where people of all races, nationalities, religions, and languages come together in unity and peace. I was amazed at how well everyone behaved (despite the large quantities of alcohol being consumed) and the general excitement in the air was contagious.

The Middle East @ The Masquerade

The Middle East is not from the Middle East at all. In fact, they don’t even make Middle Eastern sounding music! They are a musical collective from Australia and have had lots of success in the indie music scene there. It wasn’t until last year that they gained popularity in the US (thanks to the blogsphere) and pretty soon they were opening for big acts like Grizzly Bear and now Frightened Rabbit.

Frightened Rabbit @ The Masquerade

This past weekend I caught the Scottish band Frightened Rabbit on tour in support of their 3rd studio album. Grant Hutchinson delivered the same energy & emotion that I love so much on his band’s records. It was also a first for the band when they had a young man propose to his girlfriend on stage before they played “Old, Old Fashioned.”

Freelance Whales @ The Earl

Freelance Whales are one of those indie bands that seem to be on the cusp of becoming incredibly popular. There must be a ridiculous amount of pressure on them, but I don’t see how they can go wrong. Their pop sounds are so infectious and upbeat that you’ll be singing along before you know it. They give me the kinds of goosebumps I get when listening to a great Sufjan Stevens track or a melodic tune from Múm.

When I saw this group of five perform at The Earl in Atlanta, GA on March 11th they were having as much fun making the music as I was listening to it. Below are some of my photos, followed by two videos from the concert:

Wraslin’ at the Macon Coliseum

I’ll never forget seeing WWF wrestling for the first time way back when I was in 4th grade. I was baffled by the spectacle of it. My dad quickly explained to me that it wasn’t wrestling, it was wraslin’. Nonetheless, as a 4th grader I didn’t care – those guys looked awesome.

Since then the WWF has changed a lot (including its name which is now WWE), but one thing remains the same – it’s still wraslin’. I’ve also changed a lot since then, yet I’m still baffled by the spectacle of it. It is a very strange (and often disturbing) melange of entertainment, violence, and sex.

With my photos from the event, I tried to cut through the big, brightly-lit and colored showmanship and get a gritty up-close perspective on the action.
