Yesterday, my son Trey and I met up with Jym Davis at Pickett’s Mill Battlefied Historic Site to be extras in a movie. The film is called “Get Low” and stars Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, Lucas Black, and Bill Cobbs. That’s two Oscar winners and a nominee right there! Plus the director Aaron Schneider is an Oscar winner as well and the screenplay was co-written by Chris Provenzano who has written for the TV show Mad Men.

The movie is a dark comedy based on the true story of a man who staged his own funeral so that he could attend it. You can read more about my experiences as an extra on my family blog. Below are some of my favorite images from the day.

*Special thanks to Jym Davis for some of the images and for letting me use his camera to grab some of my own!

I’m experimenting with using the Lensbaby on my dSLR to create videos. My camera can continuously take about 3-4 images per second when shooting at the lowest JPG quality (still higher than HD). The video above was made during a walk with Heidi’s family one night. I was using my flash with the photos so the bursts were limited to about 20-25 shots each.

Short video documenting our one day roadtrip to the Florida Everglades on April 10, 2004. We drove down the Tamiami Trail and then took the scenic Loop Road down into the swamps. I have never seen so many alligators in my life. Such amazing creatures.

The 3 minute video was edited in only 5 hours (sounds like a lot for 3 minutes, but it really isn’t) and incorporated several ideas we were experimenting with for our upcoming 3 week California road trip that summer.

This video is a split-screen photo slideshow of William and Heidi Haun’s childhoods, their college years, and their wedding. It was created for family and friends shortly after their marriage.

Wedding slideshows tend to be low-quality, cheesy presentations full of unnecessary transitions and effects. This was my attempt at the “art of wedding slideshows.” The music is very laid back and the only effects are slow zooms in and out of the images.

I started editing this on my old 333mhz computer and it just didn’t work. Rendering took ages and I didn’t finish it in time for the wedding. So I completed the project after the wedding and actually added photos of the wedding and ended it with the shot of me crossing over the center line to Heidi at sunset as line disappears.

This video is probably the favorite of all those I’ve made over the years. Not only for the way it turned out, but the sentimental value as it is the trip I proposed to my wife on. In fact, she is the “star” of the video as several scenes and shots center around and focus on her. You can see how in love the guy behind the camera was.

Amazingly enough this 25 minute video was edited from only one hour of raw footage… that’s how great the stuff was.
