Earth Day Photoshoot

It wasn’t so much that it was Earth Day as it was we were just plain bored. My son has been on Spring Break all week and we were running out of new activities to entertain us. You can’t go wrong with an animal costume, some face paint, and a romp in the woods.

Fog Experiments with Jym Davis

Fellow artist Jym Davis is always a blast to collaborate with. Usually when we get together we have no agenda and just experiment with some vague ideas. Back in July he came down to Macon for a visit and brought his fog machine. We took it out into the woods behind my house with a took some photos and video of the smoke as it floated around in the dark. Jym just so happened to have some brilliant red fabric and created the quite eerie, shrouded character.

Iathen’s Fate

I made this video to test out my new Canon 7D’s video capabilities. The video was shot with a Lensbaby Muse with plastic optics which gives it the hazy look and the colorful lens flares. It was filmed at 60 frames per second in 720pHD, meaning I could achieve a very smooth slow motion effect.

The idea for the story came from a drawing of Mike Lowery’s that I saw on his blog a while back. The song “Strung Finger of an Old Dear” by Macon, GA’s own Oh Dorian seemed to be a perfect match to the dreamy footage playing in slow-mo.

Green Theme

One of my favorite things my local camera club does is give out theme assignments. Usually everyone is given the same theme and they have a few weeks to shoot photos that fit that theme. Recently they switched things up a bit and had everyone draw a different, random theme out of a hat. I got GREEN – here are my photos.

An Elephant in the Woods

Yesterday was a very overcast day so my son and I ran down to Michael’s to grab a couple of the animal hat/masks I’d seen there before. We then headed out into the woods behind my house where I took photos of him wearing the elephant hat (his favorite).

A Romp in the Rain

The past two days have been full of rain and dark skies so when the rain finally stopped falling I let my son run around the woods behind our house. There is a trail back there that had turned into a creek and flooded the forest floor. Trey had a blast exploring and jumping in puddles – I had a blast snapping photos.

** April 2, 2009 update ** The first image below won 1st place in my camera club’s recent theme assignment “Promises”. I titled the photo “Looking for the Rainbow” when I submitted it.

A Video for Total Chickens

I’m working on video for an online competition for a band called Rafter on the Asthmatic Kitty label (Sufjan Stevens’). The contest involves making a video set to one of the 4 songs Rafter has released online (more details).

My brother David helped me film while up in Tennessee and here are some still frames from the project.
