If Jym Davis’s previous short “White Space” is about the materials of the Genesis Bible creation account, then “In Flux” is about the spiritual…a figure passing from life into death. We are again presented with a figure’s head, this time the white mud is replaced by a blurred light and eminating colors. The figure has an instability about it, “In Flux” between the ethereal and the corporeal. In addition to directing the short film, Jym appears as the subject. Influences include Pipilotti Rist, Bill Viola, and Kubrick.
“In Flux” was created in collaboration with Florida artists Kenny Jensen and William Haun and debuted in Greensboro, North Carolina. Since then the video has been shown around the world at various galleries and festivals. Also see “White Space”.
I worked with Jym on the earliest versions of his video art piece “Headroll” in early 2002. But the second piece, “In Flux” was the one I helped with the most.
“In Flux” was a collaboration in the truest sense fo the word. Jym sent me a miniDV tape with raw footage he had shot, asking me to use my knowledge of AfterEffects to to manipulate the colors digitally. I would render a clip, post it online for him to review, and await his feedback via email. I would then made changes & additions per his instructions and repeat the process. This continued for several weeks until I had numerous altered versions. I then put them to tape and mailed it back to him. A week before the exhibition, Kenny flew up to Greensboro and worked with Jym adding some more layers of natural texture on top of my colored clips. They edited it all into a final cut and added audio. The final version was finished at 7AM the day of the exhibition.
